| Description | There are about 500 amino acids in nature. Twenty of these are amino acids that serve as building blocks for proteins in the human body; these are called "basic amino acids." These basic amino acids can be divided into the categories "essential," "semi-essential," and "non-essential." In terms of its biochemical structure, taurine is not actually a true amino acid (although it is considered one) and is not incorporated into proteins. In the body, taurine is mainly present in nerve tissue, eyes, and muscle tissue. Taurine is a semi-essential nutrient for older children and adults and is synthesized primarily in the liver and brain from the sulfur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine; vitamin B6 is involved in this conversion. Infants and young children cannot yet produce taurine themselves; for them, taurine is an essential nutrient. The body's own synthesis is limited and dietary intake is important for good taurine status, especially when taurine needs are increased. Since taurine is mainly found in meat, fish and poultry, vegetarians and vegans are more likely to have inadequate dietary intake. |
