| Description | Inulin is a natural complex carbohydrate, an oligosaccharide that belongs to the fructan group and is found in 36,000 plant species. It is a soluble fiber, but it is not digestible and passes through the small intestine to be fermented by the bacteria in the large intestine. Inulin is naturally found in wheat, onions and garlic, bananas, asparagus and chicory. Inulin is considered a FODMAP and some individuals who are sensitive to these foods should introduce it slowly as a food or prebiotic for the colon bacteria so that it does not raise blood sugar. This inulin comes from chicory and is commonly given at the same time as supplementing with probiotics to provide nutritious food for optimal growth of the good bacteria. |
