Sodium butyrate, a source of butyric acid, is the main source of energy for the intestinal epithelium. Butyric acid is formed in the large intestine as one of the main products of fermentation of dietary fibre by the intestinal microbiota. It accounts for approximately 70-90% of all short-chain fatty acids in this area.

Disturbances in the composition of the gut microbiota and a diet low in fibre can lead to reduced butyric acid production. To support its production, it is advisable to consume fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Prebiotics (such as inulin and FOS) and probiotics, (yoghurt, kefir and pickles), can also be beneficial and limiting the intake of processed foods. Sodium butyrate is also a natural ingredient in dairy and fermented products. However, it is not always possible to ensure an adequate supply of butyric acid through the diet; in such cases, supplementation can be an effective solution.

Our Sodium Butyrate SR is rich in butyric acid. 1 daily serving contains 960 mg of sodium butyrate, providing 768 mg of butyric acid. Thanks to the extended-release (SR) microencapsulation technology, the active substances are gradually released while neutralising unpleasant taste and odours.
