| Description | The milk thistle is an annual to biennial plant, which is most common in southern (Mediterranean) Europe. It is also known as Christ's crown, thunder thistle, fever thistle, fech thistle, lady's thistle, savior's thistle and belongs to the Carduoideae plant species. The ancient Greeks recognized the special benefits of this plant as early as antiquity, but it was not until the late Middle Ages that it established itself among medicinal plants. Today it is one of the most popular medicinal plants in Europe and even conventional medicine would be unthinkable without it. The unique ingredients of milk thistle are mainly found in the black seeds, which are harvested from the ripe fruit. The valuable ingredient silymarin contained here is made up of the following substances: silibinin, isosilibinin, Silychristin and Silydiani. In addition, there are other important substances in the pure milk thistle fruit, such as protein, oils, vitamin E, mucilage and flavonoids. |
