General information about the acerola fruit

Acerola (Malpighia glabra) is a plant species from the Malpighiaceae family, native to the tropical regions of South America. Its origin is believed to be the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Today, it is cultivated in numerous South American countries, Brazil, India, as well as in Africa and Australia. Visually, it closely resembles the European sweet cherry, although the two are unrelated. The ancient Mayans were already aware of the beneficial effects of the acerola fruit. The acerola fruit is also known by the following names: acerola cherry, azerola, maple cherry, Antillean cherry, cherry of the Antilles, Puerto Rico cherry, West Indian cherry, Jamaican cherry, and Barbados cherry.

Several manufacturing processes are available for producing acerola extract, and these are crucial for the bioavailability and quality of the acerola fruit powder. At Vit4ever, we exclusively extract our acerola using a freeze-drying process. This is considered the gentlest method, as the structure of the acerola cherry is preserved and the drying process takes place at low temperatures of up to 30°C. This protects and stabilizes important and heat-sensitive substances such as vitamin C and other plant compounds. Acerola extract is naturally very hygroscopic. This means it readily absorbs moisture from its surroundings and can clump. For this reason, we have added a small amount of natural maltodextrin, derived from the cassava plant, to our acerola extract.
